August 2026 brings some genuinely good news on that front, along with a handful of policy changes worth understanding before your next application or review.
When Will SASSA Children’s Grants Be Paid in August 2026
SASSA Children’s Grants, covering Child Support, Foster Care, and Care Dependency, will be paid on Thursday, 6 August 2026. This follows the Older Person’s Grant on 4 August and the Disability Grant on 5 August, with a fourth day on 7 August reserved separately for beneficiaries flagged for grant reviews or eLife Certification.
The agency has returned to its standard four-week payment cycle for August, after adjusting the previous month’s dates to fit the calendar. That means caregivers can plan around a consistent 30-day gap between payments again, rather than the shifted dates some households saw in July.
How Much Is the Child Support Grant Now
The Child Support Grant currently pays R580 per child per month, up from R560 before the April 2026 increase. This is the most widely received grant in the country, reaching over 13 million children through their caregivers. Caregivers looking after orphaned or kinship children may also qualify for an additional R280 top-up on top of the standard monthly amount.
The wider Children’s Grant category has seen similar movement. The Foster Child Grant rose to R1,290 per month, and the Care Dependency Grant, paid for children with severe disabilities, now sits at R2,400 per month, in line with the increases applied to Older Person’s and Disability Grants from April 2026.
What Changed With Income Eligibility Limits
This is arguably the most consequential update for anyone considering a new Child Support Grant application. SASSA has revised its means test thresholds upward. A single caregiver can now earn up to R5,800 per month and still qualify, up from the previous R5,100 limit. For married couples caring for a minor, the combined monthly limit has increased from R10,200 to R11,600.
Worked out annually, that’s R69,600 for a single caregiver and R139,200 for a couple. It’s worth noting there’s no asset test attached to this means test, unlike the criteria applied to Older Person’s Grants. So a caregiver who owns a car or has modest savings isn’t automatically disqualified the way asset-tested applicants sometimes are.
Are Approvals Actually Getting Faster
SASSA says yes, and this is worth some healthy skepticism paired with cautious optimism. The agency has introduced self-service kiosks with free Wi-Fi at its offices, aimed at cutting maximum wait times down to around 90 minutes for eLife and biometric verification. More notably, SASSA claims Child Support Grant applications can now be approved on the same day, a significant change from waiting periods that previously stretched close to three months, similar to what Older Person’s Grant applicants still experience.
The catch, and it’s an important one, is that same-day approval depends entirely on arriving with every required document already in order. Offices are still turning people away when paperwork is incomplete, so the speed only helps if you’ve prepared properly beforehand.
What Documents Do You Need to Apply
If you’re applying for a Child Support, Foster Care, or Care Dependency Grant for the first time, SASSA requires the following, and it’s worth making copies of everything before your visit:
- Valid identity documents and birth certificates for yourself, your child, and your spouse if married
- Proof of marital status, including a marriage certificate or the birth or death certificate of a spouse where relevant
- Proof of income for both you and your spouse
- A certified bank statement covering the last three months
- Proof of address, such as a utility statement in your name that’s no more than three months old
Caregivers can claim for up to six non-biological or legally adopted children under this grant. If your application is denied, you have three months to lodge an appeal with the Department of Social Development.
