SASSA Confirms August Grant Payments and a New Fourth Day
If your SASSA grant didn’t land on the date you expected last month, you probably checked your banking app three or four times before giving up and calling a family member to ask if theirs came through. That confusion is exactly what SASSA is trying to head off with its August 2026 announcement, and it’s worth understanding properly instead of just scanning the dates and moving on.
The Confirmed August 2026 Payment Dates
SASSA has confirmed the following schedule for the main grant categories:
- Older Person’s Grant: Tuesday, 4 August 2026
- Disability Grant: Wednesday, 5 August 2026
- Children’s Grants (Child Support, Foster Care, Care Dependency): Thursday, 6 August 2026
- Fourth payment day: Friday, 7 August 2026
What the Fourth Day Actually Is
This is the part that trips people up. The fourth payment day, 7 August, is not a bonus payment or a general catch-up date for anyone who missed the first three days. It’s reserved specifically for beneficiaries who’ve been flagged for a grant review or eLife Certification.
SASSA National Spokesperson Dr Paseka Letsatsi has said the agency keeps running into the same problem: people who’ve been moved onto this fourth date get anxious when their money doesn’t arrive during the normal window, even after receiving an SMS telling them exactly why. Letsatsi pointed to July as an example of how the system already worked. Older Person’s Grants went out on 2 July, Disability Grants on 3 July, and Children’s Grants on 6 July, with review cases paid on 7 July. August simply repeats that same structure a few days later in the calendar.
If you’re one of the beneficiaries paid on the fourth day, there’s an extra step attached. You’re expected to visit your nearest SASSA office to complete the review or certification process. Skip that step, and there’s a real risk your grant gets suspended in the next payment cycle. This isn’t a minor administrative footnote. Reviews and eLife Certification exist under the Social Assistance Act to confirm you’re still eligible, to catch cases where a grant is still being paid to someone who has died, and to keep fraud out of the system. SASSA has separately confirmed firing over a dozen Eastern Cape officials for fraud and corruption this year, so the emphasis on tightening review processes isn’t happening in a vacuum.
Why Your Details Matter More Than You Think
SASSA keeps repeating the same appeal every month, and it’s worth taking seriously: update your contact number and address whenever they change. The agency notifies beneficiaries through the details captured when they first applied for a grant. If you’ve moved or switched SIM cards since then, an SMS about a review can go straight to a number that isn’t yours anymore, and you’ll only find out something’s wrong when the payment doesn’t arrive.
A Public Holiday Sits Right in the Middle of the Month
National Women’s Day falls on 9 August, a public holiday, landing two days after the fourth payment day and more than two weeks before the SRD batch window opens. It shouldn’t delay either payment cycle directly, but expect longer queues at ATMs, Post Office branches, and retailers like Pick n Pay, Shoprite, and Checkers around that date. If your grant lands between 4 and 6 August, withdrawing on 7 or 8 August, or waiting until 10 August, will likely save you time standing in line.
What To Do If Something Feels Off
Don’t wait for a letter if your grant doesn’t arrive when expected. Call SASSA’s toll-free line on 0800 60 10 11, or visit your nearest office with your ID document. Ask directly whether you’ve been flagged for a review. If you have, bring whatever supports your continued eligibility, proof of address, proof of income, or guardianship documents for foster care and child support cases, since incomplete paperwork stalls a review just as long as one that hasn’t started.
One more thing worth knowing if you still use a SASSA Gold Card: Postbank has said these cards will be phased out by 31 August 2026 as part of its migration push, so if you haven’t switched over yet, this month is the time to sort it out rather than finding out the hard way at a pay point.
Grant amounts themselves haven’t changed for August, they were adjusted back in April as part of the 2026/27 budget, and being paid on the fourth day doesn’t mean you’re getting less money. It just means SASSA wants a conversation with you before the next one goes out.
