From my experience working with families, the care dependency grant exists to help you take a child with severe disability who is in need of full-time and special attention. It covers disabled children from birth until they turn 18, and to qualify a parent, primary caregiver, or foster appointed by court must be South African citizen permanent resident.

If you earn more than R223 200 year as single, or your combined income goes above R446 400 married, note the limit does not apply to parents who are foster. The child must be younger, not cared permanently in a state institution, have severe disability, and both live in Africa, where a medical officer will assess before approved.

How Payments Reach You

The Known Social Security Agency SASSA pay the grant through different methods, whether cash at specific point on particular day, or electronic deposit into bank Postbank account.

A bank may charge service fee, or an institution acting administrator like welfare organisations assist. If unable collect money yourself, you can appoint procurator at an office, give power attorney, and receive on your behalf.

Reviews, Suspensions, and Lapsing

SASSA decide when a grant is reviewed, using declared apply basis for the decision, and you’ll be notified three months advance of the date a review will take place. A life certificate document is used to prove you are still alive, due every year, especially if you receive via bank or institution, and are required to fill it at offices.

A suspension may follow if child’s circumstances change, the outcome of a review, you fail co-operate, commit fraud, misrepresent, or a mistake earlier.

What Should Do When Applying

You go to the nearest office, bring 13-digit bar-coded identity ID and birth certificate. If you don’t these, complete affidavit in standard format in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths official, plus a sworn statement from a reputable person such as councillor, traditional leader, worker, minister of religion, or school principal to verify name and age.

An official takes fingerprints, refer to Department Home Affairs, and if failure with documents, the grant means suspended. 

You may need proof applied, temporary issued applicable baptismal certificate, road health clinic card, report, assessment that confirms disability, marital status, salary slip, statements previous pension slips, relevant details for refugee, child’s police worker’s biological maintenance, unemployed Unemployment Insurance Fund UIF, discharge employer, permit, court order, and if too old or sick to travel, a family member or friend with letter or doctor’s note. Finally, application form is completed, keep the receipt.

If an application Is Not Approved, SASSA inform in writing unsuccessful, and if you disagree, appeal to the Minister of Development at national level, explaining why, made within 90 days after being notified.

From start to finish, it can take up to three months to process, the service is free, the form is not available online, and for Contact, reach Care Dependency applicant services where you must be permanently residing, under age, provide clinical information, referral, baseline, treating facility practitioner, previously rejected on medical grounds, undergo functional confirming disability, meet requirements.

Means Test except care-dependent children in State-funded institution, supply coded smart card or alternative identification in absence, follow prescribed acceptable, ensure going attend attendance, noting years, produce refusal, support, not taken into consideration.
