SASSA Card Renewal 2026: Gold Card to Black Card Deadline Guide
If your SASSA grant is paid onto a Postbank Gold Card, there’s a hard deadline you need to know about. Here’s exactly what’s changing, why, and how to switch without paying a cent.
The Deadline: 31 August 2026
Postbank has confirmed that all SASSA Gold Cards will be permanently deactivated after 31 August 2026. This is the final deadline, it has already been pushed back several times since the original 2025 cutoff, and Postbank has stated publicly there will be no further extension.
Your grant itself is not affected or cancelled. Money will still be deposited into your Postbank account on the usual schedule. The problem is access: if your card stops working, you won’t be able to withdraw or spend your grant money until you collect a new one.
Who This Applies To
You need to switch only if your grant is currently paid onto an old Postbank Gold Card (the card with the gold-coloured band across the front).
If your grant is paid into a personal bank account FNB, Capitec, Standard Bank, ABSA, Nedbank, or TymeBank, no action is needed. This deadline doesn’t affect you.
Why the Switch Is Happening
The original Gold Card’s security chip was compromised in a 2021 breach. The South African Reserve Bank directed Postbank to replace every Gold Card with the new Postbank Black Card, which runs on updated banking infrastructure with better fraud protection.
How to Switch — Step by Step
The replacement process is free and quick:
- Bring your ID. A green ID book, smart ID card, or valid temporary ID is enough — no other documents needed.
- Visit a Postbank service point. These are located inside select Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer, and Spar stores nationwide.
- No forms, no appointment. Staff will verify your identity (often with a fingerprint or facial scan) and issue your Black Card on the spot.
- Your balance transfers automatically. Any funds on your old Gold Card move across to the new card immediately.
- Set your PIN. You can do this at the counter or at any Postbank ATM within 24 hours of collecting your card.
You can collect your Black Card at any participating site in any province — you don’t need to go back to where you originally registered for your grant.

What If You Can’t Travel to a Swap Site?
If you’re elderly, bedridden, or living with a disability and can’t get to a service point, a family member or a registered procurator can collect the card on your behalf — but they’ll need a power of attorney or a SASSA-issued procurator letter to do so.
Lost or Stolen Gold Card?
Report it to SASSA immediately on 0800 60 10 11. You’ll be issued a Black Card directly as the replacement — Postbank is no longer issuing new Gold Cards.
Scam Warning
Card-switch season brings out scammers targeting grant beneficiaries. Keep these rules in mind:
- Postbank and SASSA will never ask for your PIN, OTP, or banking password — not by phone, SMS, or in person.
- The replacement is completely free. If anyone asks you to pay a fee to “process” your new card, walk away — it’s a scam.
- A genuine Black Card has “Postbank” printed on the front. If it doesn’t, don’t accept it.
- No forms need to be signed during a genuine card swap. If someone asks you to sign something, refuse and contact Postbank directly.
- Destroy your old Gold Card yourself once your Black Card is active — don’t hand it to anyone.
