What you need to know about SASSA grant payments for March 2026
In South Africa’s system, every payment cycle matters because it keeps millions of households afloat. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA ) confirmed the March 2026 payment schedule, with disbursements beginning in the first week of the month.

Older person’s grants are paid on Tuesday 3, Disability grants on Wednesday 4, and Children’s grants on Thursday 5, helping families plan ahead.
Payment amounts and collection realities
From experience following payouts, knowing payment amounts and collection details helps families plan better.

The Old Age Grant for 60-74 years is R2,315, for 75+ it is R2,335, while Disability, War Veterans, and Care Dependency grants are R2,315. Child Support is R560, Foster Care R1,250, and the SRD amount is R370. SASSA distributes income support to over 19 million beneficiaries, and in an economy facing high unemployment, inequality, and food inflation, even small disruptions can ripple into household hardship.
Why verification has tightened
Last week, SASSA disclosed that 70,000 grants were temporarily suspended after reviews found some beneficiaries no longer met eligibility criteria.
These suspensions stem from intensified verification checks aimed at preventing fraud and duplicate payments.
The agency reports tighter screening, cross-checking bank data across government databases, now saving about R44 million monthly, as pressure has been building for years to curb double-dipping, especially after the SRD grant was rolled out rapidly during Covid-19, making it difficult to administer at scale.
SASSA eligibility thresholds and oversight
Under SASSA thresholds, the National Treasury in April 2025 required stronger oversight, including quarterly reporting, expanded income checks using financial-sector data, and biometric verification for flagged beneficiaries.
To execute this, integrated data from banks, credit bureaus, revenue service, student-aid, payroll systems, and correctional services is used.
CEO Themba Matlou said these measures are necessary to protect the integrity of the system, comply with legislation, and manage fiscal pressure, even as parliament and civil society groups raise concerns about stricter compliance colliding with operational constraints.
Assets, income, and grant limits
The Assets threshold for Older persons, disability, and war veterans grants allows a Single applicant up to R1,524,600, while a Married applicant may have R3,049,200.
The Annual income limit is R107,880 per year for Single applicants and R215,760 if Married. For caregivers, the Child Support limit is R67,200, while the Care Dependency Means test applies to a Parent or primary caregiver, with R277,200 as the Married income cap.
SRD income threshold
For the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant, the Income threshold remains R624, which continues to guide eligibility for this form of temporary support.
